If you’ve been on the hunt for a productivity device that’s: Gentle on the eyes, Built with a solid battery and is Lightweight and easy to carry, then the Viwoods AiPaper might just be what you’re looking for.
This sleek device features a 10.6-inch next-generation E Ink screen, and after weeks of real-world testing, I can confidently say-it might be one of the most undervalued e-ink tablets I’ve ever reviewed.
In this article, I’ll walk you through everything I’ve learned while using the AiPaper, including:
A breakdown of the technical specifications
Detailed battery performance tests
Thoughts on the interface and usability
And a final verdict on who this device is perfect for
But before we get into the deep dive, let’s start with a high-level summary of the device and what makes it stand out.
🔷 Viwoods AiPaper Review – In a Nutshell
The Viwoods AiPaper is an ultra-thin, lightweight e-ink tablet that stands out as one of the most portable 10.5-inch options currently on the market. After several weeks of testing, I can confidently say it’s a well-designed device that feels especially suited for professionals, students, and anyone who needs a distraction-free workspace.
Its 10.6-inch Carta 1300 screen is one of the key highlights. The large display makes it easy to view drawings, diagrams, and multi-page documents without constant zooming or scrolling. Whether you’re reviewing research papers or sketching out ideas, the screen stays clear and sharp-even under bright sunlight-which is especially useful for fieldwork or working in well-lit environments.
For reading, the AiPaper natively supports PDF, EPUB, and several other popular formats. You can also install apps like Kindle or Kobo, offering even more flexibility. The high-resolution display renders text crisply across a large area, making extended reading sessions comfortable. Just keep in mind, the device doesn’t have a front light, so it works best in good ambient lighting.
Viwoods has also been consistently pushing out software updates-and they’re making a real difference. The system feels much smoother and more polished than when I first started testing it. Everything from navigating menus to switching tools is intuitive and responsive. In day-to-day use, I’ve found it ideal for handwritten notes, brainstorming sessions, and reading-focused workflows.
What also sets the AiPaper apart is its built-in AI functionality. While not a core feature for everyone, I’ve personally found the AI tools surprisingly helpful for organizing tasks, summarizing meeting notes, and assisting in idea development. It’s not flashy or overcomplicated-it just quietly adds value where you need it.
That said, there are a few limitations to be aware of:
There’s no front light, so nighttime use is limited.
The device lacks built-in speakers, though Bluetooth audio is supported.
It doesn’t include a MicroSD card slot, meaning internal storage is fixed.
There’s no gyroscope, so screen rotation must be done manually.
If Viwoods continues improving the software-and so far, they’ve shown strong momentum-the AiPaper could easily become a go-to productivity tool for those who value focus and clarity. With a price tag of $550 in the U.S. or €479 in Europe, this is definitely positioned as a premium device. But in my view, it offers the kind of build quality, screen technology, and thoughtful software that justify the cost.

📝 Performance & Usability
The 4100 mAh battery has been delivering strong results so far, comfortably lasting several days with light to moderate use. I’ll go into more detail about battery life later in this article.
The display is one of the best I’ve seen in this price range. The Carta 1300 Mobius panel not only looks sharp with 300 PPI, but also holds up impressively under bright lighting conditions-making it ideal for outdoor reading or fieldwork.
On the software side, Android 13 runs smoothly thanks to Viwoods’ custom launcher. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, even if you’re new to Android-based e-ink devices. Setting up the Google Play Store takes just a few minutes, and once configured, you can install a wide range of third-party apps without issue.
The inclusion of popular apps like Kindle, Kobo, OneNote, and Libby right out of the box is a thoughtful touch, allowing users to get started immediately.
⚠️ Things to Consider
There are a few hardware omissions you should be aware of. Without a gyroscope, the screen won’t auto-rotate-you’ll need to switch orientation manually. The lack of a front light makes the device less suitable for dark environments. And because there’s no built-in speaker, you’ll need to use Bluetooth if you want to listen to content.
Personally, I didn’t find these to be major drawbacks, but it’s worth thinking about how these omissions might affect your own workflow.
🔷 Build Quality & Design
The Viwoods AiPaper presents itself as a sleek and modern device with a strong visual identity-and mostly solid build quality to match. But there are a few details worth discussing.
🧱 Materials & Finish
The back of the device is made from plastic, but thankfully, it’s fingerprint-resistant and stays clean even after extended use. The body is framed by a smooth metal edge, which transitions into the front panel in a way that feels seamless and well-machined.
The front of the AiPaper is a single flush surface with very narrow bezels and a slightly wider chin at the bottom. This space houses three touch-sensitive buttons, which add both form and function:
Back button
Home button (long-press opens task manager)
AI button (long-press records a 15-second voice message and triggers AI response)
These buttons feel thoughtfully integrated into the design and give the device a unique workflow advantage. The AI shortcut, in particular, is one of the more interesting features-something we’ll explore further later in the article.
🖐️ Ergonomics & Form Factor
The AiPaper’s design is elegant and refreshingly uncluttered. At the top, you’ll find a power button with a built-in fingerprint reader, which works well and adds a layer of security. At the bottom, there’s a USB-C charging port, a charging indicator LED, and two microphones mounted on the front edge.
The microphones deliver clear, high-quality recordings, which makes voice memos or AI-triggered notes genuinely usable.
One area where Viwoods pushed the boundaries is the device’s thickness. At just 4.5 mm (0.17 inches), it’s impressively thin-possibly too thin. While the lightweight design makes it incredibly comfortable to hold for long periods, the structural rigidity suffers slightly. Applying light pressure to the corners causes a bit of flex and subtle creaking, which detracts from the overall premium feel.
In contrast, some competitors-like the Boox Note Max-use internal metal reinforcements to maintain structure even with plastic backs. The AiPaper doesn’t appear to have this level of internal support, and while that’s not a dealbreaker, it’s something worth keeping in mind.
Still, the included protective case helps. It’s a vinyl cover with a suede inlay, featuring:
A sturdy magnetic closure
A side rail for storing two spare pen tips
A snug fit that holds the device securely in place
In all my testing, the device never slipped out, and the magnets felt strong enough to trust in daily use.
✍️ Stylus Experience
The stylus that comes with the AiPaper is well-balanced and thoughtfully built. It feels comfortable to write with, has a natural grip, and includes two methods for erasing:
A pressure-sensitive eraser on the top end that adjusts the size of the erase area based on how hard you press
A side button that also triggers the eraser tool
Unfortunately, the side button isn’t customizable. That’s a missed opportunity, especially since there’s already an eraser function on the opposite end. Hopefully, a future software update will allow users to remap that button to something more useful.
Included in the box are five extra pen tips, split into two types:
Long-lasting tips, which feel harder and resemble a ballpoint pen
Smooth-writing tips, which offer more glide and feel softer on the screen
Both tips work well, but personally, I preferred the smooth-writing version. It delivers a more fluid, paper-like experience. If you need more, you can buy a pack of nine replacement tips for $25, which works out to roughly $2.50 per tip.
💬 Final Thoughts on Design
All things considered, the AiPaper makes a strong first impression. It looks great, feels modern, and comes with a well-thought-out set of accessories. While I do wish it were just a bit sturdier, the comfort and usability of such a lightweight device can’t be overstated-especially when combined with a high-quality display and a refined writing experience.
This is clearly a device built for getting work done, and so far, it holds up well under real-world use.
🔷 Display
The Viwoods AiPaper features a Carta 1300 Mobius e-ink screen-one of the latest and most advanced e-ink displays available today. It brings significant improvements in contrast, clarity, and refresh rate compared to older Carta models.
What makes the Carta 1300 Mobius special?
The term Mobius indicates that this is a flexible e-ink display, which offers several key advantages:
Lighter and thinner: Unlike traditional glass-based screens, the Mobius panel uses plastic, making the device noticeably more lightweight and slim.
Increased durability: Without fragile glass, the screen is less likely to crack or shatter from drops or pressure. While you won’t be bending the display yourself, the internal flexibility adds resilience.
Sharp visuals and a high-quality writing feel
With a resolution of 300 PPI, the AiPaper delivers sharp, detailed images and crisp text. The contrast is excellent, and thanks to the included contrast adjustment setting, you can fine-tune the display to suit your personal preference-especially useful for dark images or text.
Another standout is the matte finish on the screen, which mimics the feel of real paper. It offers a slight resistance when writing, striking a perfect balance:
Smooth enough for fast note-taking
Textured enough to feel natural and tactile
Writing on this surface feels responsive and enjoyable, making it a great option for those who write frequently.
But there’s no front light…
This is where opinions will differ. The AiPaper does not come with a built-in front light, which may be a dealbreaker depending on how you use the device.
In daylight or bright indoor spaces: The screen looks fantastic without any need for extra lighting.
At night or in dim environments: You’ll need an external light source, such as a bedside lamp. While this might be fine for some, others may miss the convenience of an integrated front light-especially when reading in bed or trying not to disturb someone nearby.
In short, if you’re someone who primarily reads or works in well-lit spaces, the lack of a front light won’t bother you. But for nighttime use, it’s something to consider.
🔷 Battery Test
The Viwoods AiPaper comes equipped with a 4100 mAh battery, which according to Viwoods, should last up to one week with daily use of about two hours. In my testing, I found this estimate to be accurate, typically getting between five and seven days of daily use-a solid performance for an e-ink tablet.
To better understand battery life under different conditions, I ran two specific test scenarios for both reading and writing:
Low-impact scenario: Wi-Fi off, Bluetooth off, using Fast Refresh mode
High-impact scenario: Wi-Fi on, Bluetooth on, using Quality Refresh mode
Battery Drain Results:
Usage Scenario | Battery Drain per Hour | Notes |
---|---|---|
Reading (Low-impact) | 1.5% – 2% | Page turn every 20 seconds |
Reading (High-impact) | ~2% | Wi-Fi & Bluetooth active, Quality Refresh |
Writing (Low-impact) | ~10% | 2% drain every 12 minutes of writing |
Writing (High-impact) | ~10% | Same as low-impact, consistent drain |

Because the AiPaper doesn’t have a front light, the difference in battery consumption between the low- and high-impact scenarios is minimal, which reflects the efficiency of its hardware and software combination.
In writing tests, battery usage was about 2% every 12 minutes, or roughly 10% per hour of continuous writing. While not groundbreaking, these results show consistent and reliable battery performance without unexpected drains.
Finally, even during extended use in direct sunlight, the device stayed cool with no overheating observed throughout my testing.
🔷 Interface and Performance
The Viwoods AiPaper offers a clean, clear, and user-friendly interface designed with productivity in mind. One of the things I appreciate most is how all the essential features are accessible directly from the home screen, making navigation straightforward and efficient.
Home Screen and Navigation
On the home screen, you’ll find quick access to several core features:
Paper: For your handwritten notes
Daily: Your calendar and task manager
Meeting: Dedicated notebooks optimized for meetings
Learning: A hub for reading PDFs and books
Picking: For managing your screen captures
Apps: Where you can launch any third-party apps you install
Additionally, a sidebar duplicates these features and adds more options such as:
Mailbox
Viwods Community Discussion and Support
Settings
This layout means you have everything you need right at your fingertips.
Customization Wish List
One area I’d love to see improved is home screen customization. Currently, the layout is fixed-you can’t rearrange icons or move features around. This limitation is something I also mentioned in my review of the AiPaper Mini. While it’s not a dealbreaker, adding this flexibility would make the experience even better.
Comparison to Competitors
In my experience, navigating Viwoods devices feels more intuitive than on some other e-ink brands like Boox. While Boox offers extensive customization options, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Viwoods strikes a good balance by providing enough customization for key features without complicating the user experience. Plus, they regularly release updates that bring new features and improvements.
Performance Highlights
When using the Fast or Ultra Fast refresh modes, the device responds quickly to touch inputs, and switching between apps or pages feels smooth and snappy. Of course, due to the nature of e-ink technology, you might occasionally notice a brief delay while a page loads, but overall, performance is impressive.
Stability and Reliability
One of the biggest strengths I noticed during testing is the software stability. Throughout extended use-whether switching pages, using AI tools, or running third-party apps-I experienced no crashes, glitches, or slowdowns. Everything loaded smoothly, giving a reliable and frustration-free experience.
🔷 Features
The Viwoods AiPaper comes packed with some standout features that really enhance productivity and make everyday tasks smoother. Here are a few of my favorites:
Picking Section
This is a powerful tool that lets you annotate over third-party apps such as the Kindle app or web browsers. You can:
Write notes on top of any content
Crop parts of the page
Save everything directly into the Picking section
For example, when I’m researching online, I can quickly capture text snippets, add handwritten thoughts, and keep it all organized in one place inside Picking. It’s incredibly handy for keeping track of ideas and information.
Quick Refresh Gesture
A small but effective feature – simply swipe from the top-left corner of the screen to refresh the display. This makes the interface feel snappier and helps clear any ghosting without interrupting your workflow.
Calendar Section
The Calendar app is intuitive and flexible:
The 30-day view lets you draw or write notes directly inside each day’s box
Tap a day to add task lists, notes, events, or link to Paper notebooks
Connects seamlessly with Gmail and Outlook calendars
Switch views easily between month, week, or day with the button at the top right
Long press the plus icon to record voice events for quick reminders
Notebook & Meeting Security
You can lock individual notebooks or meetings using either a passcode or fingerprint scan. This is great for protecting sensitive documents or information you want to keep private.
Touch-Sensitive Buttons
The three buttons at the bottom of the device – Back, Home, and AI – provide quick access to essential functions:
The AI button, in particular, lets you launch voice commands and AI interactions instantly
Long-pressing Home brings up the task manager for multitasking
Search Functionality
The Search bar on the home screen is convenient for finding:
Filenames
Tags
Note that it currently doesn’t search within handwritten notes or text inside documents, but it’s still a useful way to locate files quickly.
Multiple Ways to Import Files
Transferring books and documents to the AiPaper is easy and versatile. Options include:
Bluetooth transfer
The ViTransfer app using QR codes
WLAN Transfer, where you enter an IP address into your browser – my personal favorite for laptop-to-device transfers
Cloud services like OneDrive and Google Drive
Together, these features make the AiPaper a truly versatile and powerful device for reading, note-taking, and managing your workflow.
🔷 Pricing
The Viwoods AiPaper is currently priced at $549 in the US and 478 euros in Europe on their website. Although it is often promoted as a discounted sale, I consider $549 a fair standard price. Finding it for less would be an excellent deal.
What You Get
The purchase includes: AiPaper tablet, Stylus, Protective case, Five spare pen tips, and Charging Cable.
Buyer Protection
Viwods offers a 100-day risk-free return policy along with a 14-month warranty, which is exceptional in this space and provides extra peace of mind when making a premium purchase.
Pricing Comparison
Device | Screen Size | Display Type | Approximate Price (US) | Approximate Price (Europe) | Included Accessories |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Viwods AiPaper | 10.65″ | Carta 1300 Mobius | $549 | 478 € | Stylus, case, 5 spare pen tips |
Boox 10.3-inch | 10.3″ | Carta 1200 | $410 | 420 € | Stylus (varies by package) |
Supernote Manta | 10.7″ | Carta 1300 Mobius | $669 | 711 € | Stylus and case included |
Summary
The AiPaper sits firmly in the premium segment but offers a compelling combination of features, build quality, and buyer protections. Compared to competitors, it strikes a good balance between price and functionality.
